Free Will and Determinism in Counseling Theory and Practice

Description: This webinar invites attendees to question the nature of our decisions. The philosophical debate surrounding free will and determinism is foundational to counselors’ conceptualization of clients. Discussion on this issue surrounds the degree in which our action or behaviors are freely chosen or otherwise determined forces beyond our control. Some would say we are endowed with the freedom to choose our actions, while other would argue behavior to be a result of external determinant forces. Some offer a compromise to the argument. This is relevant to how counselors understand the role of the therapeutic relationship, one's relationship to their environment, and one’s capacity to transcend their current condition. This presentation will explore three major arguments regarding the relationship of free will and determinism. Attendees will learn/discuss the significance of free will and determinism relevant to counseling theories and contemporary perspectives of mental health.

Presenter: Alfredo Palacios, PhD, LPC, NCC
